Rotating parts out of balance will lead to mechanical impact at the interface, or to vibrations which cause the relative movement of contacting surfaces in the equipment. Removing the source of vibration would be ideal, but damping vibrations may be effective. Surfaces designed to move against each other can be coated to improve hardness or lubricity, whilst the combination of metals at points of movement can also reduce fretting i.e. as with bearings and bushes, using a relative hard/strong metal in combination with a softer/less strong metal. As fretting corrosion will likely result in the removal of a significant proportion of the metal surface, the impact of it cannot be removed, merely replaced. This could mean building up the missing material through weld repair, increasing the size of one of the components to fit, or replacing one or both components.
